INDIE FILM THE DEAD OUTSIDE NOMINATED FOR 4 BAFTA SCOTLAND NEW TALENT AWARDS

Scottish indie horror feature “The Dead Outside” has been nominated at BAFTA Scotland New Talent Awards in the categories of Best New Work, Director, Producer, and Writer(s). The awards ceremony will take place in Glasgow on March 13th, 09.

“The Dead Outside” is the debut feature-film from Dumfries-born director Kerry Anne Mullaney. Co-written with Producer Kris R Bird, “The Dead Outside” follows a man and a young girl who struggle to build a new life in the Scottish countryside following a devastating plague. Whilst invoking a beautiful sense of isolation and dread, the film touches on the difficult subject of euthanasia, making it an unusually intimate exploration into the morality of life, death, and compassion. The deft handling of such emotive topics make the film a poetic piece of film-making in a genre that so often lacks subtlety.

The very making of “The Dead Outside” is a tale of overcoming the odds. With it being the first feature from the Edinburgh-based production company Mothcatcher Films, Kris and Kerry took the decision to self-finance out of their own pockets and structure a shoot with minimal crew. “The Dead Outside” was shot over just two weeks with a cast & crew having previously only worked on music promos or short-films, and is a testament to what can be achieved with a strong creative vision, clever use of technology, and a lot of hard work!

“The Dead Outside” landed its Premiere at the UK’s biggest genre festival, Film4 FrightFest. It screened to a 600-strong Leicester Square crowd alongside just four other British horrors, before going on to win a Special Jury Mention at Italy’s prestigious Science+Fiction Festival. “The Dead Outside” is set to continue its festival run through 2009, with a DVD release on the cards for later in the year.

INDIE FILM THE DEAD OUTSIDE WINS SPECIAL JURY MENTION AT THE PRESTIGIOUS SCIENCE+FICTION FESTIVAL IN TRIESTE

Scottish indie horror feature “The Dead Outside” wins Special Jury Mention in the Best Feature Film Award at the Trieste International Science+Fiction Film Festival (Italy), one of Europe’s oldest and most influential genre-film festivals. Staring newcomers Alton Milne and young Sandra Louise Douglas,“The Dead Outside” is the debut feature-film from Dumfries-born director Kerry Anne Mullaney.

Co-written with Producer Kris R Bird, “The Dead Outside” follows a man and a young girl who struggle to build a new life in the Scottish countryside following a devastating plague. Whilst invoking a beautiful sense of isolation and dread, the film explores the sensitive subject of euthanasia, making it an unusually intimate exploration into the morality of life, death, and compassion. The deft handling of such emotive topics make the film an elegant and poetic piece of film-making in a genre that so often lacks subtlety.

Lauded by the festival jurors for its “idiosyncratic review of the genre”, “The Dead Outside” beat off much bigger budget competition from the likes of Eden Log [FR], Chrysalis [US] and Mutant Chronicles [UK]. As the feature-debut from the young Edinburgh-based production company Mothcatcher Films, the very making of “The Dead Outside” is a tale of overcoming the odds. It was shot in Dumfries & Galloway on an extremely low budget, with most cast & crew having previously only worked on short-films. Producer Kris R Bird, “As first-time filmmakers we were unable to raise finance for the project, but we didn’t let it deter us. We self-financed the production, and 18 months of hard work later we’re elated to be getting such a great response from critics and festivals.” “The Dead Outside” had its World Premiere two months earlier in front of a 600-strong crowd at London’s Film4 FrightFest, the UK’s premiere genre-film festival.

With “The Dead Outside” still running the film-festival circuit in preparation for a 2009 release, the team are already planning their second picture, the sci-fi/horror film “Arthropoda”.

Director Kerry Anne Mullaney, “My real motivation was to get out and make the kind of films that I’d love to watch. I think that there’s been a shortage of strong, psychological horror films that don’t simply fall back on ‘shock-value’ and gore for their impact, so it’s fantastic to be getting recognition for what we’re doing!”
